Protect paving margins before final smoothness testing

Ride-quality specifications can move a project from bonus to penalty. TotalPave IRI gives paving contractors a practical way to measure smoothness during construction, pinpoint rough segments, and act before official testing.

Where smoothness risk shows up

When IRI is treated as an end-of-job result, the first clear warning may arrive after the crew, equipment, and traffic control have moved on.

-
Late profiler feedback
-
Hidden rough segments
-
Costly remobilization
-
Lost incentives and penalties

What continuous IRI checks make possible

Fast, repeatable smartphone runs create a feedback loop for superintendents, QC teams, and project managers throughout the job.

Find issues while crews are still on site
Verify changes with repeat runs
Target repairs instead of guessing
Document project-level due diligence
TOTALPAVE IRI FOR PAVING CONTRACTORS

Find rough segments before final smoothness testing

Run quick smartphone IRI checks during paving so your team can see where ride quality may be trending out of spec. Results sync to the TotalPave web portal as mapped, segment-level roughness data, giving supers, QC staff, and project managers a practical way to target fixes while crews are still on site.

HOW IT WORKS

Build smoothness checks into the paving cycle

Use TotalPave IRI as an on-demand feedback loop from the base course to the final pre-acceptance check.

Step 1

Mount

Secure and level the phone in a sturdy windshield mount inside any vehicle.

Step 2

Drive

Start the app and drive the target lane.

Step 3

Review

Upload the run and use the web portal to locate rough segments and review results.

Step 4

Fix & Validate

Address problem areas while the job is active before official testing.

PRACTICAL VALUE

More feedback before the result becomes expensive

TotalPave IRI makes repeated roughness checks affordable and practical, so teams can manage smoothness as a process metric instead of a final surprise.

CONTRACTOR CAPABILITIES

A focused IRI toolkit for paving QA/QC

TotalPave IRI gives field and management teams the tools needed to collect, review, communicate, and document project smoothness checks.

No special Equipment

Collect International Roughness Index data with a mounted smartphone and any vehicle already available to the project team.

Segment-Level Mapping

See color-coded IRI results by configured project segment so isolated rough areas are easier to locate and investigate.

Repeat Pass Comparison

Perform multiple passes to develop a more representative result and verify whether corrective work improved the target section.

Internal Target Review

Compare project results with your own QC thresholds before the agency or owner completes required acceptance testing.

Project Notes & Records

Add lane, direction, lift, shift, or project context to collection logs and retain a reviewable record in the portal.

Tables & Exports

Search, filter, and export IRI information for project reporting, internal reviews, spreadsheets, GIS, and handoff documentation.

FAQ

Paving contractor IRI FAQs

Answers to common questions about equipment, collection timing, accuracy, project workflow, and acceptance testing.
Do we need a specific vehicle?

No. Collection requires a compatible smartphone or tablet, a sturdy windshield mount, and a vehicle in good working condition.

Runs can be conducted at any stage of construction from the base course, newly paved lanes after a major lift or shift, after corrective work, and again before final handoff whenever site and traffic conditions allow.

Collection is designed for speeds above 20 km/h or 12 mph. The app tracks speed and filters low-speed portions so they do not distort the IRI result.

Field validation studies report results typically within about 10% of a Class 1 profiler. Repeat passes help produce a representative project average.

Typically no. TotalPave IRI is a practical construction QC and screening tool but your contract-specified acceptance testing method remains the governing measurements.

Yes. Portal maps, tables, notes, and exports can support internal QC reviews, project records, discussions with field teams, and pre-handoff documentation.

IRI results appear in the TotalPave web portal almost immediately after the log is uploaded.

The only exception is the first time you collect data in a new area. In that case, the system first needs to create the mapped road line based on where you drove, then calculate the IRI results for that new line. This mapping process runs nightly, so first-time results are typically available the next day.

After the road line has been created, future runs on that same line process much faster and usually appear almost immediately after upload.
